The history of Hotel Le Francis:
deeply rooted in Gaspésie
In 1965, Francis and Alexandrine Cyr founded Hôtel-Motel Francis on the banks of the Petite-Cascapédia river. At the time, the hotel had 22 motel rooms, each one with a balcony offering a breathtaking view of the river’s crystal-clear waters.
After several decades of ownership changes, the hotel fell on hard times and went bankrupt in 1989. That same year, Lucille Roy-Duchesneau, who hailed from a family of hoteliers, bought the business with a clear vision: to transform the former motel into a welcoming, high-quality establishment.
Since the 90s, the hotel has completed a number of ambitious renovation projects: the addition of a 40m pedestrian bridge, pedestrian trails, guest room renovations, transforming the bar into Pub Bayou in 1999, and converting the basement into bright meeting rooms.
During a second wave of renovations from 2003 to 2005, management reconstructed a majority of the rooms, added a heated pool and outdoor hot tub, and launched many on-site amenities: kayaks, bicycles, air conditioning, WiFi, and digital locks.
In 2004, we officially became Hotel Le Francis to reflect our new identity. The following year, we received our 4-star classification – the highest in the Bonaventure region.
From 2009 to 2011, the dining area was completely reinvented to include Resto Bayou. This new space was designed to be Pub Bayou’s warm and contemporary counterpart, featuring a central fireplace, a wine cellar with over 1,500 bottles, and 70 seats, adding a refined twist to our culinary offering.
In 2011, Daniel Duchesneau – Lucille’s son and the Assistant Manager since 1997 – took over as General Manager. He continued the hotel’s modernization efforts with a renewed focus on customer experience and sustainable development.
In 2013, the hotel became one of the first tourist facilities in Gaspésie to join the public EV charging network, highlighting its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
In 2015, the brand was overhauled with a new logo and redesigned menus. True to its mission, Hotel Le Francis continued to evolve while remaining a cherished Baie-des-Chaleurs landmark, renowned for its hospitality, comprehensive amenities, and regional roots.
Since 2017, Hotel Le Francis has continued its modernization journey to further improve the guest experience, including a complete renovation of all river-view rooms. In 2020, Pub Bayou was redecorated through a contemporary lens and its terrace was covered to extend service later into the season. In 2022, all washrooms in section 132 were redone from top to bottom.
